We need your help making history!
Operation Shoestring is seeking volunteers to transcribe audio recordings collected from an oral history project entitled “Raising Children in Central Jackson.” These narratives are an opportunity for people to speak for themselves about their knowledge and stories about raising children – and being raised – in central Jackson communities. Transcribing these recordings will make them more accessible to researchers and descendents for generations to come.
A successful volunteer transcriber will have the following qualities:
- At least 5 hours of time to devote to this in a 2-week timeframe
- Respect for the information narrators share
- Intermediate or advanced skills in typing
- Comfort with basic digital file sharing, including Word or google docs
- Internet access and a computer (you cannot do this on your phone!)
- Patience and persistence: it takes most people 5 hours to transcribe 1 hour of audio
We already have interviews waiting for you, and we expect to collect others through the end of the summer of 2023.
Training provided this June: let us know if you’re interested!
