#Afterschoolworks: Building Mississippi’s Workforce
Mississippi’s businesses are increasingly looking for employees with the ability to solve complex problems and to work effectively in teams. Afterschool and summer programs offer children opportunities to develop the technical and social skills they need to be successful in challenging careers and as responsible, contributing members of society.
At Operation Shoestring, we’re guiding our kids through a number of activities and programming that result in strengthening their social and life skills. Being cooperative, learning to actively listen and being a team player are all skills that would serve anyone well, especially as they enter the workforce. And our kids are learning to master these skills in afterschool.
According to a report published by the American Youth Policy Forum,“Afterschool settings are uniquely positioned to cultivate these social and emotional competencies and have demonstrated success in doing so for many years…”
The pressing need for youth to develop soft skills is apparent as we read reports from the business community stating there’s a serious lack of these skills in the workplace. Afterschool programs – like Operation Shoestring’s Project Rise – are proven to help children build resilience, improve communication skills, and develop leadership qualities.
And we don’t do it alone. With support from our parents, staff, volunteers and community partners, we’re able to ensure our program includes opportunities for kids to learn the necessary skills to thrive in their future careers.
