A Hop, Skip, and Jump Into Literacy
To see the glee on our little kindergarteners’ faces as they lined up to play blending sounds hopscotch will melt your heart. First, the kids rolled a die to determine which colorful square to jump to land. Once there, they would need to think of a word that started with that particular blend.
With this activity, our kids hopped their way through the building blocks of literacy. According to afterschool technical assistance group, You for Youth, “Afterschool is the perfect time to integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing—building students’ competence in all four literacy skills. Students can choose lively, interactive, and fun activities that engage all facets of language communication.”
Being able to expand and enhance the instruction from our children’s school day is one of our primary goals. A focus on literacy especially early on is the key to gaining a strong educational foundation. We’re always working to ensure our children develop, grow, and thrive.
