Shoestring Spotlight – Dr. Alison Turner
Welcome to Shoestring Spotlight, a new feature where we ask the employees, families, and volunteers of Operation Shoestring about their experiences. Our first Shoestring Spotlight is Dr. Alison Turner, our ACLS Fellow and Research and Data Coordinator.
We asked Dr. Turner to share some of her favorite experiences at Operation Shoestring, and she wrote the following story.
“My favorite memory so far was step class! I had only been in Jackson for a month when I was invited to join Operation Shoestring parents and caregivers at the gym. When the group of us walked in, it was clear most of us weren’t regulars. None of us had matching spandex or bulging muscles —I was wearing jeans —but we were welcomed like olympic athletes. The instructor made sure none of us was left behind from stepping up, down, and around our own small boxes, with the sage advice that if we couldn’t keep up to “just keep moving!” None of us could keep up but we all kept moving, working our laughing abs more than any other muscle group.”
