Lighting the Way for Others
Lighting the Way for Others
“A good teacher is like a candle, it consumes itself to light the way for others” This is Shekinah Robinson’s philosophy on teaching. Any weekday afternoon you can find her working with a small group of eight and nine year olds among all the buzz from Operation Shoestring’s Project Rise kids in the cafeteria at Galloway Elementary,
Sitting in the middle of the group, Shekinah effortlessly handles all the problems coming her way. From “Take another look at this problem.” to “What does your homework instructions say?” she works with each child to ensure their understanding and accuracy of the assignments.
Shekinah has been working with Operation Shoestring Project Rise afterschool and summer camps for four years. Working with her favorite age group is what drew her to our organization. “I love when working with kids around that age (3rd and 4th grade). They are growing up and becoming themselves,” she said.
Shekinah says the dedication to the kids she has witnessed from staff is one of the greatest parts of the program. “I remember one summer, the kids were all really interested in playing kickball. Ms. Pool, capitalizing on their interest, created an entire tournament. Each teacher had a team and the games were so fun!
Operation Shoestring is so grateful for amazing teachers like Shekinah because they’re willing to use their talent to light the path for our kids. Their dedication to providing safe, enriching spaces for the children we serve is phenomenal. Our teachers are an integral part of the success of our afterschool program and we thank them for their service.
